Whitetail Hunting During Rifle Season…
|
Whitetail Deer around the Milk River
Our whitetail herd population is at a constant high level. The private land we hunt serves as a travel route for to and from the bedding grounds for the deer because of the alfalfa fields and oxbows.
The Rock Creek & Willow Creek drainages are tributaries of the Milk River. The whitetail travels up the Rock Creek drainage. With such an attractive natural habitat and low hunting pressure, the whitetail herd has grown over the years. The herds have also had time to develop a good supply of young, running age and mature deer. The MFWP insist that the majority of the whitetail deer still die of old age in the Milk River area.
Hunting the Milk River whitetail is exciting. Large herds of whitetail deer feeding on the area alfalfa fields are a sight to see!
Our Whitetail Rifle Hunt
Our hunts are limited to 5-6 rifle hunters per week (normally 2-3 Whitetail hunters, 2-3 Mule Deer hunters) with one guide every two hunters. As a hunter, you make the decision on which deer to harvest, but our guides prepare you, explaining diferent sizes of deer etc.
On arrival to Rock Creek Lodge, everyone goes to the range with a Rock Creek personal to sight in your rifle. At this time the guides can see how you are shooting and make sure that the rifle is sighted in after your trip. If you are flying into Glasgow you will sight in on your first day of hunting but will not effect the amount of time that you get to hunt.
On a typical day, the mornings are spent out scouting, spotting and setting up for a stalk on mule deer and the whitetail deer that are resident deer at Rock Creek. By mid morning, most of the hunters come in for a large meal. The Whitetail hunters that are going to the Milk River to hunt prepare gear for the afternoon hunt, travel to there stands and stay in the stand or blind until full dark. No walking in the feeding areas or bedding grounds, as this pushes the whitetails out of your hunting area, not to be back for the evening hunt.
Milk River whitetails range in size from young bucks at 110-125 points, 3-to 4-year-olds at 125-140 points, and mature bucks at 140 points and up. A mature Milk River whitetail buck will leave an impression that you will never forget. Big bodies, deep made, muscular make up (300 pounds & up), leave you no doubt as to what you have seen! Some big scoring bucks have been harvest to the past two years 172 whitetail and a couple of 200 mule deer.
Mule Deer Gun Selection
What gun to bring? Dean says to bring your favorite, best shooter. The .25 calibers to the .30 calibers are all that is needed. Our mule deer have body mass of 200-up and your longer ranging guns will help during this hunt. Sighting is done at Rock Creek Oufitters before your hunt. This is mandatory. Your guide will have you sight in for 100 yards 2Ah high. This will get most calibers into the kill zone. If you fly in, you will not be able to do this until the 10:00 AM break on the first day of the hunt. Those who drive in will sight in after their arrival at 4:00 pm.
What About the Weather
The weather in late October and November is unpredictable. It can be nice and sunny, marming to 30 degrees or blustery cold dipping to 30 below. It can go from dry and arid to a full blow snowstorm with measurable snows. See Our equiptment list to be prepared. If expreme negative temperatures are a big concern to you, book during the first two weeks of our hunts. Rock Creek Outfitters has two permanent high-rise heated shooting houses. Both are in historic harvest locations for both whitetail and mule deer.
